MSG IR10.8 imagery with pseudopotential temperature and wind at surface: time sequence

The image reveals the high extending part of the super cell at the northeastern edge of the surface front that is indicated by a discontinuity of the wind direction and the pseudopotential temperature. Over the northern parts of Middle Europe warmer and humid air is streaming against colder and dry air over Northern and Eastern Europe.

A strong temperature contrast existed over the Northeastern parts of the North Sea. We recognise a cyclonic circulation in that area. A more pronounced flow of warmer air in direction to the supercell can be observed (Dutch coast)

The temperature contrast intensified during the last hour.

Without significant changes the whole pattern moved to the East.

Near the southwestern edge of the high extending cloud we find a tpspot-contrast of more than 10 K and a confluence south and southeast of that cloud feature.

All features (strong temperature contrast, confluence at the southern and southeastern edge of the super cell) moved to the East and affected North Germany.

With increasing solar irradiation the temperature increased south of the cloud anvil of the super cell yielding a triggering of a new cell at the southern edge of the convective complex (blue coloured pixel south of the bigger blue area).

The process of the intensification of the southern part of the cell continued enhanced by the increasing tpspot-contrast achieving about 20K whereas the left part decayed.

The horizontal tpspot-contrast in the vicinity of the super cell weakend and the blue coloured area (cloud tops up to the tropopause and higher) diminished although we recognise a V-Notch-like structure indicating a severe convective event.

The height of the cloud tops decreased although the strong tpspot-contrast and the confluence at the southern edge of the super cell still existed.
