A Back-Bent Occlusion is that part of an Occlusion cloud spiral which reforms into a Cold Front band with some cyclonic curvature with the approach of a cold air mass.



Common Remarks

The original concept of Back Bent Occlusion introduced in the 1940s refers to the deepening of a secondary low near the Occlusion point, and the bending back of the occluded front between the two lows. This kind of development is described in the conceptual model "Occlusion: Secondary Low" (see Secondary Low Centres in Occlusion cloud bands ).

In this chapter the concept "Back Bent Occlusion" refers to a part of a warm occluded front that changes its direction of motion and turns into a Cold Front. Warm and Cold Occlusions are discussed in the chapter "Occlusion", for example Occlusion - Warm Conveyor Belt Type (see Occlusion: Warm Conveyor Belt Type ).

The term "back bent front" is used in the literature also in connection with the so-called T-bone development, where the warm front elongates backwards in a rapidly deepening cyclone.
