Welcome to Polarstern

We invite you twice a year to a virtual trip with the German research vessel Polarstern from Germany to South America or South Africa. Are you a student, general or maritime forecaster or a climatologist? Then you are welcome to train your skills in climatology and in the interpretation of satellite images and products including wind information and altimetry with Meteosat, Metop and JASON. The satellite images will be considered in the context of other data (NWP and observations from Polarstern and other ships.

  • Trainingactivities

On 11 April 2012 the German research vessel Polarstern will depart from Punta Arenas and will arrive on 16 May in Bremerhaven.

During this trip we will offer you:
    • Observations, satellite images and ECMWF model fields
    • Measurements directly from the Polarstern
    • Weekly online sessions

  • About Polarstern

The Polarstern is almost 310 days a year at sea, most of these in the Arctic and Antarctic during the respective summer. In this project we have a look to both transfer trips per year. This vessel operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association.

  • Weekly Reports

On 11 April 2012 Polarstern will start the cruise ANT-XXVIII/5 from Punta Arenas (Chile) to Bremerhaven. The cruise will be utilized for continuous measurements of atmospheric and marine properties as well as for energy and material fluxes between ocean and atmosphere. Instrument tests and observations of sea bird and marine mammals will be carried out, too. Additionally 32 stations are planned, where CTDs as well as underwater light measurements will take place.
