Derived Parameters: Temperature advection

Temperature Advection

The significance of the temperature advection allows us to analyse the development of Alex through its transition and the later frontal development through the transition as well as the phase of the system.

As hurricane Alex moves east away from its development area into the Atlantic there is very limited, if no temperature advection at high levels, however at low levels temperature advection is visible. This is localized near the hurricane centre and due to surface troughing and does not extend through the atmosphere. The development of frontal characteristics of the system are found from 12 UTC on 6 August as cold advection begins to develop over New Foundland at 500 hPa. The upper level trough (identified in the 500 hPa chart) develops and extends through the sequence, enhancing the advection and developing true frontal characteristics.
